After some consideration, I decided that I just don't have the quantity or variety of me-made garments to be comfortable wearing one every day, and in the end I decided not to do Me-Made May this year. It's not a total loss-I have some great pieces already, and I have some fantastic things on the needles, and I just need to work on figuring out how to make the kinds of things that I'm comfortable wearing every day, instead of just a couple of times a month.
On Saturday, I went fabric shopping with my mum, and I got quite the supply. I have a small fabric stash already, but these are all destined for specific projects. I'm currently at the uncomfortable point with sewing where my abstract skills are much higher than what I can actually make my hands do, which is really frustrating, but there's no way past it except to sew a lot.
Here I've got fabric for three dresses, a tank, and a cardigan. I have fabric for another couple of dresses already in my stash, and I've got a sub-stash of fabrics to make some tops. I had hoped to do more sewing during March and April, but that didn't happen for a few different reasons. I've made my main goal for the rest of spring and summer to get my technical skills closer to my abstract construction knowledge, and hopefully end up with some cute stuff!

ReplyDeleteHaha I leapt right into MMMay without really thinking about whether it was practical! I sort of blame you actually, since it was your post a while back that got the idea in my head. :D That's okay though - I'm using this as an opportunity to reassess my closet and what I really wear vs. what I want to wear vs. the crap that's actually in my closet. We'll see how long I last actually wearing me-makes this month!
ReplyDeleteYour fabric finds are wonderful! I adore every piece you found there. Don't worry about your skills - they'll get there with practice. Tackle projects at and slightly higher than your skill level, and build from there as you gain confidence. And don't listen to anyone when they say that something's too hard! Just do it, and you'll figure it out. :)

ReplyDeleteI'm in the same boat as the two of you, Caitlyn & Kat. I THOUGHT this year would be the year, but alas. It's not just the ability, it's also the season. We've had a very cold spring so far (snows last week), but starting this week the sun is out, and spring is catching up with a vengeance (25+ degrees Celsius). If it had been Me-Made-December I would have been able to get it done with all the knitted sweaters, but May? Hopefully next year both of our sewn wardrobe have caught up with our knitted wardrobe!

I'd really like to do this someday - the problem is that my sewing skills have slipped somewhat and I'm at the point where I know I'd need to put in a lot of effort to get them back up to scratch and...well, I'm not sure how bothered I am about doing that! But I would like more me-made items in my life so maybe I'll have a go :)
ReplyDeleteI definite think the sewers (is that the right word? because it makes me think of the underground type sewers...) have an advantage on the me made may, since you can conceivably whip up a simple tee in a few hours (so I hear). You've picked beautiful fabrics, I look forward to seeing them all sewn up!
